It’s an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The STEM-Up Initiative, the first of its kind, was piloted in Boyle Heights, a community in East Los Angeles. “STEM-Up is a Great Minds in STEM Initiative, funded through a contract from the Department of Defense as administered by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District Office.”
What will STEM-Up do?
It will provide an innovative solution to close the gap of the nation’s lack of a STEM workforce. “STEM-Up is an action strategy developed from a set of design principles grounded in a theory of change, which presents a practical roadmap to gear schools and local communities towards STEM.”
STEM-Up defines the significance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for our nation’s prosperity:
STEM drives innovation and innovation will maintain our nation’s economic base and our status as the world’s technology leader.
It is important to increase and expand the nation’s pool of homegrown STEM talent for our government, industry and universities.
Our students, families and schools are vital to the economic solution and should take part in the opportunities available in STEM fields.
Acknowledgment and Action Leads to Actualization
Right now STEM-Up, through its comprehensive community based approach, works with 20 public schools within its place of origin to connect its residents to the surrounding STEM community of higher learning institutions, government agencies, corporations and other organizations.
While navigating STEM-Up.com, I came across a wealth of information and resources. They have compiled an endless inventory of links for parents, teachers, kids and the community at large. These resources provide teachers with the arsenal they need to perform as critical partners in educating and exposing students to STEM. STEM-Up encourages parents and caregivers, who guide their children throughout the course of their education, to visit the site frequently for the latest STEM-related events and technology news.
Perusing through Boyle Heights Community section I found people, events, organizations, and businesses that converge with STEM-Up’s mission. “STEM-Up is here to mobilize these organizations in a community-wide STEM awareness and empowerment effort and give them the tools they need to promote STEM through their existing infrastructures.”
This site doesn’t miss a trick when it comes to providing heaps of assorted material. Other valuable features on the site include STEM camps, a description of their courses and activities, and links to each camp in order to discover more about their enrichment. There’s a page devoted to an almost infinite amount of internships and scholarships with application and requirement links. You’ll also find lists of STEM-Up schools and colleges, as well as local museums.
Perhaps the coolest aspect of the initiative is the STEM-Up Awareness Campaign. It is a PSA (Public Service Announcement) driven effort to raise awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math career pathways and demonstrate that STEM is everywhere! How do they do this? Through The Artists Alliance. “…A collection of sports, entertainment and industry figures will lend their voice and celebrity to the print, radio, Internet and television PSA campaign and support the STEM-Up effort as a whole.” Check out some of the PSA Posters on STEM-Up’s Awareness Campaign page.
STEM-Up is another campaign, amongst others, and predecessor to inevitable parallel crusades. These initiatives all regard education as the dire impetus that will perpetuate our nation’s economic fortitude. What will guarantee its mainstay? The approach and creed of campaigns like STEM-Up.
