These same manufacturer say, “I don’t have the time or resources to go out and gather new business, I’m making parts.“ Well, you don’t need much of either.
New Business Doesn’t Just Drop on Your Doorstep. Some Pro-activity is Required.
Not every manufacturing business is created equal. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to needs and budget but no matter who you are, there are some really ‘no-sweat’ things you can should do:
You’ve gotta be in the know to grow. Even if you do something relatively painless like visit the suggested links that we provide and subscribe! Sign up for emails and information about unlimited resources, programs and events that are all about assisting manufacturers. This doesn’t cost a thing.
You’ve got to be in it to win it. At the very least you learn something but what’s most encouraging are the connections you can make without risking anything.
MEP – A MUST for Manufacturers
Listen up! Membership is not required for manufacturers. Translation:
$cost$. Taking advantage of what they have to offer, even for nonmembers, just may make you and your company more efficient, profitable and globally competitive.
For those of you who manufacture in New Jersey, join Made In New Jersey (seriously, right now): (no cost, just exposure).
This is what it means for you:
- New Profile Pages: Manufacturers were originally enabled to post their basic information such as their logo, contact information and brief company description on our comprehensive directory. On the new website, every manufacturer will now have their very own personal profile page! On this new page, a manufacturer will have increased space for their company description as well as the ability to upload three pictures of their products / services, three videos and three links to company news articles.
- Featured Manufacturer of the Week: In addition to being featured on the Made in New Jersey social media sites, the featured manufacturer of the week will also be showcased on the NJMEP website for increased exposure. We will also reach out to your congressional representatives to inform them of your feature.
- Made in New Jersey Certificate: Manufactures are always welcome to display the Made in New Jersey logo on their website and packaging. We will also now be sending you an official Made in New Jersey Certificate to hang up in your facility.
- Made in New Jersey Newsletter: Program participants will be subscribed to the monthly Made in New Jersey Newsletter where we’ll provide updates about the program and keep you afloat of all the manufacturing related events and news going on in the Garden State.
- Made in New Jersey Blog Subscription: Want quick tips from industry experts on important information? Look no further than the Made in New Jersey Blog! A subscription will keep you updated on important topics.
Make It in America Supplier Scouting
MEP is partnered with a program called Buy It in America Supplier Scouting.
Important: This is not a regional/state program. This is for all U.S. manufacturers. Membership is not required for manufacturers to participate.
A component of NIST MEP, designed to find “business opportunities for small manufacturers by matching their capabilities with the supply chain needs of America’s original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).”
Collaborating with federal agencies, MEP developed processes that leverage its network of manufacturing specialists in all 50 states and Puerto Rico to explore the U.S. manufacturing landscape in search of certain American made products needed for projects that are subject to Buy American provisions. When project awardees have difficulty satisfying the buy American provisions – typically because they can’t find American companies to make the products they need – they submit waiver requests to their federal funding agency. MEP’s role is reviewing the requested waivered items, and finding suitable U.S. made products.
As of December 2010, MEP found exact or partial product matches for 53% of waivers submitted. Of those matched, collaborating agencies deemed 54% as viable U.S. suppliers and declined the waiver requests to produce abroad.
MEP is continually improving and in the process of expanding the program on a larger scale with other federal efforts. Take some time to look at the Re-examining the Manufacturing Extension Partnership Business Model report that outlines development in order to reach more companies and have a greater impact on the manufacturing sector’s performance.
This is great! I had no idea something like this existed and perhaps you hadn’t either. This is one major way to put your business on the map! I contacted the CFO of NJMEP, Lynore DeSantis to inquire about what a manufacturer like you should do to take advantage of this opportunity and be a part of their network:
The best way to make sure they are on a list is for them to send us their info so I can make sure they are in my database, they can also join our social media groups because we post all public Buy America opportunities to those sites. The first thing we do when the opportunities come through is get the info out to our Account Managers (in case they know of clients they are working with that may have the capabilities to manufacture the item), then we post the info on to our social media sites, and throughout that process I do the best I can to search in our database for manufactures that produce similar items to what is getting scouted and I send them an email with the opportunity.
Contact your local MEP but for those of you who manufacture in New Jersey you can use the contact information below:
So there you have it! Straight from the horses mouth! Lynore’s instruction for manufactures also proves another truth, one that we at The Accelerated Group have been shouting about for some time now – the VALUE of social media. The MEP is aware of its intense thrust for making connections and communicating. Manufacturers can get new business/work just by simply joining social networks, and its FREE.
