Maker Faire What is it? This is GREAT, that’s what it is! Visit the website now.

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Maker Media produces Maker Faire and publishes MAKE Magazine. The first Maker Faire was launched in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s caught on since then, with 165,000 attendees at the two flagship Maker Faires in the Bay Area and New York in 2012. Growing in popularity, over 60 community-driven Mini Maker Faires are expected around the world this year.

Hands-on activities, learning new skills and interaction draw families and curious minds. This gathering is a forward-looking smorgasbord of makers exploring new forms, new technologies, innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft. This is an opportunity for the more often invisible DIY (Do-It-Yourself) that takes place in shops or garages to enter the spotlight.

Launched in 2005, MAKE Magazine and the MAKE division served as the catalyst for a tech-influenced DIY community that has become synonymous with the worldwide movement, the Maker Movement. It is transforming hands-on learning in education and the personal lives of makers of all ages. The makers and movement are driving innovation in manufacturing, engineering, industrial design, and hardware technology. They are hobbyists, enthusiasts and students creating and producing value in the community, some of who become entrepreneurs and start companies.

Maker Faire offers the opportunity for us to see ourselves as more than consumers; we are productive; we are creative. Everyone is a maker and our world is what we make it.

Founder of the Maker Movement, Dale Dougherty:

I believe we are all makers. We can find all kinds of makers in our communities. Yet we also want to help create more makers. Through education and community outreach, we can offer the opportunity to make things to more people, but particularly children. They might find these opportunities at school but also at community centers, summer camps and science centers, or even at home. My goal is that all people, young and old, come to see themselves as makers, creators and doers because I know that the people who have the skills and knowledge to make things have the power to make the world a better place.
