It is December and so begins the month that tries women’s souls….ok, men too, and certainly every parent. So much to do and so little time to do it, and don’t even get me started on the SPENDING! There is so much commercialization of this, the biggest holiday month of the year, that it is sometimes all too easy to forget what is REALLY important. Here are a few things that I think are worth consideration as we close out 2012:
There are still MILLIONS of people out of work in this country. Normal family gifting traditions may not be appropriate or even possible for many this year. If you have family members affected by unemployment, suggest that rather than go into debt to keep up a certain “image,” the family be honest with each other about the current conditions. Share a great meal together. Spend time rather than money. Isn’t that what it’s really supposed to be about anyway?
- I read a Wall Street Journal article last week that suggested alternate gift ideas for kids. Open a stock trading account for them and teach them how to research, buy and sell. I realize that many are skittish on stocks right now, but the overall idea rocks! You get to teach your kid how to save, how to trade and spend quality time with them at the same time. That beats the latest Xbox game any day!
- Tell ‘em how you REALLY feel. A few years back I wrote a letter to each of my close friends for Christmas. In it I expressed how much they truly meant to me and how much I thought of them. I went through several boxes of tissues during the process! We all love being appreciated for our unique qualities. Consider telling the ones you care about in writing this holiday season.
Consider buying American! Recent reports say that if each of us simply spend $64 more this holiday season on American made products, we’d create about 200,000 jobs. Of course, as soon as this was reported the economists are fighting about the validity of the statement. Who cares what the number is anyway? 1,000 or 1 million – is it not worth a little effort from each of us to support the American Manufacturing Industry, which has been instrumental in every US comeback?
- Give back! I often think that the issues our society faces sometimes seem so big and overwhelming that we don’t know where to start, and therefore do nothing. What if we commit this holiday season to simply helping ONE in the coming year? If every business owner in the USA helped move ONE from the roles of poverty into a different life….move them from a “taker” into a “maker,” would not our nation be better off? If each that has been blessed with business sense and assets commit to teach ONE how to acquire the same….with the promise that they in turn pay it forward…..Impossible you say? The IMPOSSIBLE is PRESICLY what FAITH is for! Will you commit? In the true spirit of the season, I WILL, and I hope you will as well.
- OK – enough of the mushy stuff. I know you guys are asking where the real “Jersey Girl” Rant is this month. So as not to deprive you…..do we REALLY need to say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Hanukah” or “Happy Kwanza?” Is anybody out there as sick as I am of “political correctness?” I have a strong dislike for a society that tries to make us ALL THE SAME. News flash – WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME…. and that is a really good thing. Our diversity is what makes our nation great. It should be celebrated, NOT squashed!
This months RAVE is for my outrageously awesome team! I am so thankful for the people God has brought into my life. Each one “gets” our corporate culture. We work hard, we play hard and we give back. We try to do what’s right and help people along the way. Each one “gets” my wacky side….they sometimes run and hide when I declare that we’re going to start a new business or web site to better serve the manufacturing community. But their warped minds eventually come around and they dive in to accomplish what appears to be IMPOSSIBLE! For this my heart is grateful and they will ALWAYS have my prayers and best wishes for every good thing life has to offer. Two of our youngest team members, Raphael Iuzzolino and Tyler Skibines are attending Reppert’s Auction School as I write this. We are incredibly proud of them! Upon their return….every bidder that sees them at a job site….please feel free to torture them and MAKE them practice their auction “chant.” I thank you in advance.
This month’s Recommendation is for a coupon code web site, www.retailmenot.com. Log on before you shop online for discount codes. Anything that helps save money during the spend month of December gets my vote!
Best wishes for a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKAH, HAPPY KWANZA, or whatever your special holiday is.
